How To Pick The Quietest Range Hood?
Choosing a really quiet range hood can be quite a challenge, and the range hood itself is just one part of the equation. Here are my top considerations for picking the quietest range hood...
#1. Decibels
Range hoods are usually rated in decibels at their max speed setting, and that is how I have picked the quietest range hoods. The higher the decibel level, the more noise a range hood emits.
In general, my top picks of range hoods range in the 60 to 65 decibels when on maximum power.
#2. CFM
In addition to the decibel rating, the amount of CFM can make a large difference in noise.
A 350-cfm range hood will be significantly quieter than a range hood rated at 550-cfm just due to the power needed to operate at a higher fan speed.
If you want more details on picking the right CFM, you can read my full guide on range hood sizing here.
#3. The Duct
Many people don't consider the vent duct that a range hood uses in relation to noise. Unless the range hood is ductless, the vent hood should discharge to the outdoors, and this duct can have a big impact on noise.
Range hoods with larger ducts such as 6-inch will usually make much less noise than a hood that only has a 4-inch duct.
When the duct is larger, there is less air resistance, the kitchen hood doesn't have to use as much power, and therefor the vent hood is quieter.
In addition to the duct size, the number of bends in the whole duct run can have a large impact. If you have numerous 90-degree bends in the duct, then this can also add a significant amount of noise.

Why Inline Blowers Make A Quiet Range Hood?
And in addition to range hoods, I have also included an inline blower unit, which technically isn't a range hood but a remote-mounted fan.
Inline blowers are installed either in the attic or in the basement, and these are connected to an existing range hood in the kitchen.
And since the inline blower is installed far away from the kitchen hood, this means that you can have a range hood that is totally silent— minus the sound of air flow which is inescapable. Of course, you will have to remove the existing blower from the range hood for this setup to work.
