As a licensed home inspector, I have tested hundreds of range hoods over the years — and island vent hoods can be the most stunning.
These range hoods have long chimneys that extend all the way up to the ceiling. The ceiling is connected to the top of the chimney through a metal bracket that holds it in place—and the duct vents the fumes to the outside.

What Is A Island Range Hood?
An island canopy range hood is a hood style where it is ceiling mounted and the hood terminates above the range in a kitchen island. Even though under cabinet range hoods are the most common type of hood, island canopy hoods have risen in popularity over the years.
With a kitchen island, there really is only two types of range hoods that will work — an island range hood or the downdraft hood. A downdraft hood is a hood that has a motor and actually lifts up from behind or to the side of the range, and pulls in the exhaust gases downwards.
Ceiling mounted range hoods have a long and narrow section which is called a chimney. The chimney extends anywhere from a few feet and as high as several feet or more. The chimney should terminate flush with the ceiling.

How To Pick The Best Ceiling Mounted Range Hood?
Choosing the best island range hood can seem like a daunting prospect. Below are a few tips to help you get started on picking the best one...
Verify Chimney Will Fit
Many kitchen island hoods have adjustable chimneys so you can move it around to match your ceiling height.
It's important to verify that your ceiling mounted range hood will actually fit in your kitchen. Take some measurements above your cooktop and to the kitchen ceiling.
Just remember that you want your range hood to be at least 24-inches to 36-inches above your gas range.
Range Hood Width
It may seem obvious, but you want your island canopy range hood to match the width of your range or cooktop. The two main sizes are the 30-inch and 36-inch. You want to be able to capture most or all of the cooking smoke, fumes, and grease that is discharged from cooking.
Choosing Fan Speed
Most island hood vents have fan speeds in the range of 350-cfm to 550-cfm.
CFM stands for cubic feet per minute, and it is a measurement of how much air the range hood pulls out of your kitchen.
For island range hoods, the minimum recommended ventilation rate of CFM is 150-cfm per linear foot of range hood. So if your range is 36", then you would want a minimum of 450-cfm. I recently wrote a detailed guide on choosing the best CFM for your range hood.
Ducted Vs Ductless
Even though ducting your island range hood to the outside is the best option, you will also be able to make your island hood recirculating if you wish.
Virtually all range hood vents have the option to be installed as a ductless hood. The important thing about turning the range hood into ductless is that you can't just use the standard steel baffle or mesh filters.
There needs to be an additional layer of a carbon or charcoal filter which will capture smoke and odors. You will have to find the charcoal filter that is compatible for your particular range hood. Here is my full guide on how ductless range hoods work.
Sound Rating
Many ceiling mounted range hoods on the market will give you their sound level in decibels of there highest setting.
Loud kitchen island hoods are one of the most common complaints of homeowners. Unfortunately, in my experience, they are all pretty loud — at least on the high speed setting. However, the Winflo island range hood at least has a so-called sound shield installed that appears to dampen sound if that is a concern for you.
I recommend buying a range hood with a decibel rating of at most 80-dB on its highest speed. For comparison, a whisper measures 30 decibels.

Lighting
All island range hoods have some type of lighting installed. With modern island hoods, they almost all have energy efficient LED lighting already installed. The wattage of these LEDs range in the 1.5-watt to 2-watt range.
Another common critique of homeowners is that the lighting isn't strong or bright enough for their kitchen. Also, the color of the LEDs may make a difference in your kitchen.
If the range hood gives off a sci-fi blue color — this may drive some homeowners crazy.
So if lighting is an important thing for you, I would verify the color of the LEDs and the brightness by reading customer reviews.
