How To Pick The Best 400-CFM Range Hoods?
400-cfm range hoods are moderately powerful hoods that will remove smoke, cooking fumes, and grease above a cooking surface. These range hoods come in different styles such as under cabinet, island, insert, and wall mount.
At minimum, homeowners should buy a range hood that covers there cooking area. Though if you buy a kitchen hood that is a few inches wider than your cooktop, this is even better.

Is 400-cfm Enough For My Range Hood?
Range hoods are rated in CFM (or cubic feet per minute) which is a measurement of the fan strength. In regards to CFM, the Home Ventilating Institute (a non-profit industry association) recommends at least 100-cfm per linear foot for hoods installed against a wall.
If your hood is on an island, than HVI recommends a minimum of 150-cfm per linear foot. To learn more, I invite you to read my guide on choosing range hood CFM that discusses picking the CFM based on kitchen volume, ducting quality, and whether your range is gas or electric.
Under Cabinet Vent Hoods
Probably the most common type of 400-cfm range hood is the under cabinet. This range hood is installed underneath a cabinet that is directly above the oven or cooktop. The vent hood is either secured to the cabinet with screws, or it is secured to the wall with small metal brackets.
The vent can go straight up to the roof, but it more commonly goes straight out to the exterior since it is on an exterior wall. If the under cabinet hood is on an interior wall, it may need to make a 90-degree turn and go into the ceiling.

Ductless Kitchen Hoods
Another option for 400-cfm range hoods is the ductless type. The ductless hood doesn't use a vent hose since it filters and then recirculates the air back into the kitchen.
Installing ductless vent hoods is usually cheaper than venting hoods because a duct installation isn't required.
This usually isn't the first choice of homeowners, since the air quality isn't as good as a hood that vents to the exterior. Plus, ductless hoods don't remove the hot air than exterior vented hoods can remove. However, many homes simply cannot have exterior ducted hoods for whatever reason, especially condos.
Most range hoods can be converted to be a ductless hood with the additional of a charcoal filter. The charcoal filter helps removes impurities and smoke from cooking, and the aluminum mesh filter captures the grease.

Wall Mount
Wall mounted kitchen hoods, as their name describes, are mounted on the wall similar to under cabinet hoods. The main different is that there isn't an upper cabinet above these hoods, and they have metal chimneys that sometimes go all the way up to the ceiling.
The chimneys are usually stainless steel and rectangular in shape. The circular vent hose is enclosed in the chimney, and it vents to the outside.
Wall mounted chimneys are frequently adjustable, and can span the height to the ceiling, in the 6-foot to 9-foot range. Many wall mount hoods also have extension chimneys that can be purchased separately if you have very tall ceilings.
