What Is An Attic Stair Insulation Cover?
An attic stair insulation cover is used to insulate attic stairs to keep your home comfortable and save energy. Having a properly insulated attic stairs can also help prevent moisture problems in the attic.
Around 50% of a home's energy is used to heat or cool the indoor air. If your attic stairs is missing insulation, then a significant energy loss can happen through the opening.
During my home inspections, recommending insulating the attic stairs (or hatch) is one of my most frequent items on a home inspection report.
I tell my clients that the attic entrance is equivalent to having an open window in the home --- this idea usually gets my point across.
During the cold season and you have the heat on, warm air rises, so the uninsulated attic stairs acts almost like a chimney. All of the warm conditioned air on the inside gravitates towards the attic entrance, and all of that warm air goes straight up into the cold attic. Home inspectors call this the stack effect because it acts like a chimney stack.
And during the cold season, cold air sinks, so all of the cold air in the attic sinks into the attic opening and down into your home --- it's like the stack effect but in reverse.
An attic insulation blanket will tremendously help reduce energy losses.

How To Install Attic Pull Down Stair Insulation Cover?
There are two min types of attic stair insulation covers, the tent type and the zipper type.
Attic Tent Insulation Cover
The tent type makes a little tent above your attic pull down stairs and is loosely laid on top of the attic stair opening. When you pull down the stairs and go into your attic, you simply move the attic cover out of the way. The advantage to this type is that it is easy to install and move, but the negative is that it isn't very well air-sealed.
To install you simply assemble the cover (if there is even assembly required) and put it into place, it's really that easy.
The Zippered Attic Insulation Blanket
The other type is the zippered attic cover. With this insulation cover, it is stapled to the framing of the attic stair opening, and it is zippered all the way around the opening. When you want to go into the attic, you will have to unzip the opening.
The advantage to this type of cover is that it is better air-sealed around the edges. The downside is that it is more difficult to install, and the zipper breaker (or the zipper seam) is a common complaint.

Where To Find The Best Attic Stair Insulation Cover?
You can buy an attic pull down stair insulation blanket from a contractor, but the markup will be significant. Attic insulation covers are very easy to install, so in my opinion, the best place to buy one is from Amazon.
Buying from the Amazon marketplace will allow you to choose from a wide variety of products and read all of the customer reviews. The reviews can alert you to problems before buying a particular attic insulation cover.

Have you ever seen the energy guardian cover. It is more expensive than these covers, but it has a much higher insulation value and seems to be much more durable
I never heard of it but checked it out, looks pretty good.
Hi. Thanks for all the great information. I did find an error, though. Here it is:
I tell my clients that the attic entrance is equivalent to having an open window in the home — this idea usually get’s my point across.
No such word “get’s” in English. Using the apostrophe would mean “get is.” So the answer is “gets!”
Hi Gerra… I just fixed that sentence. I should probably hire a professional editor one of these days! lol
