What Is A Frameless Shower Door?
A frameless shower door is a particular style that is missing most or all of the traditional metal shower door framing.
These doors are usually made of thicker and sturdier glass (tempered, of course), that doesn't need the extensive metal frame like other shower doors — usually 3/8-inch thick or greater.
The nice thing about frameless shower doors is that it gives a more open look to your bathroom than either a shower curtain or framed shower door. The more open look allows other design details in your bathroom to stand out such as your tiling or shower head.

How To Pick The Best Frameless Shower Door?
Here are a few key considerations when shopping for a frameless shower door:
#1. Sizing
Probably the most important consideration of picking a frameless shower door is the dimensions.
Nobody wants to order a frameless shower door only to find out later that it doesn't fit — requiring either a return or wall modification.
It's important to note how the manufacturer sizes their doors. Many shower door brands size their door based on your finished wall dimensions (from the drywall), and they already take into account the clearances needed.

#2. Certified Tempered Glass
With frameless shower doors, shattering glass is sometimes a complaint among homeowners.
Even though it is made of thicker tempered glass, it doesn't guarantee that the glass won't break. Whether it is from poor handling during installation, or some other reason, they can and do break sometimes, sending tiny pieces of glass flying all over the room.
Since it is tempered, these glass pieces are very small and it avoids the larger shards if shattered. These tiny pieces of glass are unlikely to do serious injury, but it can be a nightmare to clean it all up.
If glass breaking is a concern, I recommend that you buy a frameless shower door that has their glass certified by ANSI (American National Standards Institute) which is an organization that upholds safety standards for glazing materials.
Some frameless glass doors also have safety films attached to their glass to give you another level of safety from breaking.

#3. Ease of Install
Most frameless shower door manufacturers recommend professional installations.
Unless you are confident in your DIY skills, and have studied their installation manual, installing a frameless shower door should probably be left to a pro. A lot of things can go wrong with a shower door install, and if you make a mistake — you will be responsible for footing the bill. But if you hire a licensed contractor to install it, and he makes an installation mistake... he will be on the hook for it.
But if you want to install it yourself, I recommend looking for a frameless shower door that has a reputation for an easier install.
Some of these shower doors are notorious for missing parts, terrible installation manuals, and other problems during installation.
#4. Glass Coatings
Frameless shower doors also happen to be easier to clean.
Since there isn't a frame, you don't have to deal with these seams and crevices where gunk and white mineral spots can build up. In addition, some of these shower doors are specially treated with glass coatings that resists spots, staining, and other debris — keeping it clean and spotless longer.

What is your opinion on seamless sliding doors vs doors that either open in or out of the shower? Also, we have well water and our current shower doors get white spot staining which is very hard to remove. Are there doors on the market that can resist this type of staining? Thank you
It really depends on the bathroom layout size but with sliding you don’t need to worry about clearance, and they give a sleeker look but require more cleaning. Hinged doors aren’t that convenient for small bathrooms as you can imagine. For the mineral deposit buildup, look for a door that has an advertised ‘easy clean’ coating. You will still have to clean it periodically but much less often.
Do you have an opinion about bypass sliding doors from the original shower door company? I have a very wide zero entry shower and they are the only ones I have found that will make bypass doors without a bottom track for a 72″ wide shower.
Please let me know.
Thank you!
Hi Candy,
If you are referring to the Original Frameless Shower Door company, I think it is a good brand and make high quality shower doors. It appears that they make custom doors and require a quote request, so you should probably give at least a few weeks for shipping. Any ideas on time to get the shower door?
Cheers,
Arie
