What Are Bathroom Window Fans?
Window extractor fans are convenient ways to ventilate a bathroom if you don't have a 'normal' exhaust fan in the ceiling but have a window. These simple fans are installed onto the bottom of a standard window.
Of course, just having a window cracked open can help with bathroom ventilation, but sometimes you just need something faster and more powerful.
These exhaust fans can fit standard window sizes, starting at 24-inches width, and can usually extend up to around 37-inches.
Almost all bathroom window exhaust fans have adjustable panels on each side of the fan. These 'accordion' side panels can be pulled out so it will perfectly fit your window.

How Do Bathroom Window Exhaust Fans Work?
Bathroom window exhausts all typically have reversible airflow fan heads.
These products have dual fans, each side-by-side, and they can reverse air flow either forward or backwards to either exhaust air to the outside, or to pull in fresh air to the inside.
Also, one fan head can be in exhaust mode, while the other is in fan mode (both moving air in opposite directions) to increase the air circulation. In a bathroom, you obviously would want at least one side of the bathroom window vent to be blowing the air to the outside.
Bathroom Windows With Vents Typically Come With Adjustable Thermostats
Many bathroom window fans are also designed with temperature controls or thermostats.
This means that you can have the window fan turn on and off automatically to maintain a temperature in the bathroom.

Window Extractor Fans Sometimes Include WiFi Control
Pretty much all window exhaust fans can be controlled manually by pressing buttons on the unit, but some come with remote controls.
And there are also some bathroom window exhaust fans that can be connected to your phone and it can be controlled using bluetooth. With any internet connected device, I recommend that you make sure the manufacturer takes your cybersecurity seriously.
Some bathroom window vents also have timers which will automatically shutoff the exhaust fan after a certain period such as 3-hours.

What Are The Risks of Bathroom Window Vents?
There is an important safety hazard to mention with bathroom window vent fans if it is located directly above a bathtub.
If the window exhaust fan isn't secure to the window, and if it falls into a bathtub while full of water, it can electrocute anyone bathing. Most people don't realize that even charging a cell phone while taking a bath is dangerous if the phone falls into the bathtub.
And a bathroom window fan poses the same danger if you aren't careful.
GFCI outlets are required in all outlets in newly constructed bathrooms (older houses may be grandfathered in). These outlets have internal switches that can cut off electricity to the outlet if it detects a ground fault. However, it is a good idea to avoid plugging anything into an outlet that is located directly above a bathtub — whether it is an exhaust fan or a cell phone.

Hi,
Do not have electrical outlet near window which is also above the tub.
Is there a battery operated fan that fits into window and is battery powered?
Thanks
Hey Willie… sorry but I’m not aware of any battery-powered ones. You can get a smaller stand alone battery-powered fan though, but not a specific window fan type.
